EasyJet, which has reduced the carbon emissions for each kilometre flown by a passenger by 33% since 2000, has announced it will source carbon offsets as part of an "interim measure" towards decarbonising its flights.
UK-based airlineEasyjet has announced today (November 19) that they will be offsetting all carbon emissions from their flights, but they admit this is not a "silver-bullet fix" for emissions. At easyJet we are tackling this challenge head on by choosing to offset the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of our flights starting today.
The projected offset cost has been factored in to the carrier's estimated FY 2019 fuel bill of £1.62 billion, with Lawler noting that the £25 mln represents just over 5% of easyJet's pre-tax profit previous year.
"EasyJet will compensate for every tonne of Carbon dioxide emitted from fuel used for its flights by making certain there is a person tonne less in the atmosphere".
"This is jumbo-size greenwash from EasyJet", said Greenpeace's United Kingdom chief scientist Doug Parr in comments emailed to AFP. However, she refused to fly in an airplane because of carbon footprint.

'In doing so we are committing to operating net-zero carbon flights across our network, a world-first by any major airline'. "That is exactly what our customers want us to do".
Jenny Bates, Friends of the Earth campaigner told Air Quality News that: 'We are in a climate crisis and off-setting is not the silver-bullet fix EasyJet seems to think it is'.
'People have a choice in how they travel and people are now thinking about the potential carbon impact of different types of transport'.
And it revealed that its annual profit after tax dipped 2.5 percent to £349 million in the 12 months to the end of September, citing "challenging market conditions".
