  • CHARLOTTESVILLE VA- NOVEMBER 29 Bryce Perkins #3 of the Virginia Cavaliers rushes for a touchdown in the first half during a game against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Scott Stadium

Virginia is the seventh different Coastal division victor in as many years, while Clemson is looking for its fifth consecutive ACC championship.

This year, the Commonwealth Clash's stakes are much higher because the victor of this game claims the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title and goes on to play Clemson in the ACC Championship game.

It took ending the 15-year losing streak to Virginia Tech (8-4, 5-3 ACC) to get there.

Retiring Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster's defense has registered 36 shutouts in his 33 years at Virginia Tech.

A championship game appearance was again on the line in 2011, and the Hokies won a lopsided 38-0 affair. Delaney, who missed an extra point in the first quarter, stepped up and drilled a 48-yard field goal to give his team a 33-30 lead with 1:23 to play. He came into the game having thrown for 10 touchdowns with no interceptions in those starts, and while his streak ended at 124 passes without a pick on a Hail Mary throw to end the first half, the interception by Taylor on a deep ball proved the critical play of the game.

Brady might not have the weapons, but he's surely looking like a detriment to the Pats' hopes of repeating as champs . Entering the day, the Patriots had allowed four passing touchdowns all season and had forced 15 interceptions.

Perkins also had 19 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

"I think Virginia Tech's brand has become stronger this year as they played, and their identity has become clearer of how their offense, defense and special teams fit together", said Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall, who has identified beating Virginia Tech as a top priority since his arrival four years ago. Sophomore defensive back Chamarri Conner leads the team in sacks with 5.5 and has defensed seven passes and forced one fumble. Later in the first, Perkins added another rushing touchdown, this time from 67 yards, and the Hokies looked like they were in big trouble.

Virginia Tech will await it 27th consecutive bowl invitation, the longest such streak in the nation. Hooker was unable to mount a late rally, eventually getting sacked and fumbling in his own end zone which was recovered by former Patrick Henry standout Eli Hanback to seal the victory. Perkins hit Tavares Kelly for nine yards before Delaney's kick.

With Perkins at the controls, Virginia moved the ball just far enough to get into range for kicker Brian Delaney. Then the rivals traded field goals. Perkins, who represented all but five of those yards, converted a pair of third parties and scored in delayed draws before scoring in a 39-yard touchdown run. Tre Turner groped in the first quarter fighting for extra yards near the center of the field and Hooker threw an interception that featured a failed Hail Mary when time expired in the second quarter.
