AWS not having a quantum research division made a decision to stay quiet, until now. Today, at AWS re:Invent 2019, Amazon joined the Quantum Computing market with several announcements including a fully managed Quantum service and more.
Two years after Amazon announced the Amazon Transcribe service, a tool that automatically converts speech to text complete with natural formatting and punctuation, the company announced Amazon Transcribe Medical, a similar tool that has been optimized for clinical settings. Instead, it is partnering with D-Wave, lonQ, and Rigetti and will make their systems available through its cloud. "Bringing together the full capabilities of Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband and AWS, the world's leading cloud with the broadest and deepest services portfolio, we unlock the full potential of our 5G services for customers to create applications and solutions with the fastest speeds, improved security, and ultra-low latency". They can now build and test circuits in a simulated environment and run them on an actual Quantum computer.
The online merchant is not building its own quantum computer, though. The company on its behalf will be providing its partners the kind of reach that would be hard otherwise.
To get started quickly, users have a choice of Jupyter notebooks with pre-installed developer tools, sample algorithms and tutorials.
