Genius Media Sues Google for Allegedly Stealing Lyrics

The lawsuit seeks at least $50 million in damages from Google and LyricFind.

According to Genius, which provides a database of annotated lyrics, when the company contacted both Google and LyricFind about the issue, they "assigned blame elsewhere but otherwise continued their unlawful behavior". More than two years later, Genius alleges in its lawsuit that Google and its partner, LyricFind, "continue to exploit content misappropriated from Genius's website while apparently attempting to hide that misappropriation".

The company behind Lyrics website Genius, Genius Media Group Inc., is suing Google for "unethical, unfair and anticompetitive" behaviour. The same lawsuit is seeking a permanent injunction against LyricFind from lifting song lyrics from Genius.

In the suit, which first reported by Wall Street Journal, Genius claims that the lyric licensing company LyricFind pulled lyrics from Genius' pages, and that Google used those lyrics in its search result displays.

LyricFind and Genius did not immediately respond to Gizmodo's requests for comment on this lawsuit.

While LyricFinds originally argued in a June 2019 blog post that its lyrics are taken from "numerous sources (including direct from artists, publishers, and songwriters), and then [they] proceed to stream, correct, and synchronize that data", it still admitted to "the possibility that our team unknowingly sourced Genius lyrics from another location", offering "to remove any lyrics Genius felt had originated from them, even though we did not source them from Genius' site". "The lyrics that you see in information boxes on Search come directly from lyrics content providers, and they are updated automatically as we receive new lyrics and corrections on a regular basis". But Genius says it put in time and money ("ten years and tens of millions of dollars") toward building up "a platform for music enthusiasts who transcribe music lyrics", and it's accusing Google and LyricFind of taking that work, deterring people who search for song lyrics from visiting Genius's website.

This summer, lyrics aggregator Genius discovered its content was being copied by Google and its Canada-based lyrics partner LyricFind, after spelling "Red Handed" in Morse code through a sequence of punctuation in its posts.
