Larry Page is no longer the CEO of Google's parent company, Alphabet-and Sundar Pichai, who's led Google since 2015, is taking his place.

Page and Brin wrote about their transition in a blog post and referenced their first founder's letter, in which they stated that "Google is not a conventional company". With Sundar Pichai in charge of everything, Google and its sister companies might become more streamlined.

Alphabet declined to comment on whether public financial reporting would change with Pichai assuming both CEO positions. The company's stranglehold on digital ad sales is likely central to antitrust investigations underway at the Justice Department and from almost every state attorney general in the country.

The company has also faced harsh criticism about the material on its sites - and was slapped with a US$170 million (S$231.87 million) fine because its video streaming site YouTube improperly collected personal data on children without their parents' consent. They created Alphabet in 2015 as a holding company that includes Google.

Whatever they decide to do, they will have no trouble funding it. Mr. Page is worth about $58.9 billion and Mr. Brin is worth about $56.8 billion, the sixth- and seventh-richest people in the world, according to Forbes. They will continue to be involved in the tech giant as shareholders and board members.

"I'm excited about Alphabet and its long-term focus on tackling big challenges through technology", Pichai said in a statement.

Alphabet shares rose 0.64% following the after-hours announcement to $1,303.

But Page's primary obsession has been artificial intelligence, which led to the acquisition of DeepMind, a pioneer in the AI field of deep learning.
