  • Tetsu Nakamura won what is widely regarded as the Asian equivalent of the Nobel prize for his aid work

Police in Afghanistan say a vehicle carrying a Japanese doctor, Tetsu Nakamura, was attacked by an unidentified gunman in the eastern province of Nangarhar on Wednesday.

Officials told RFE/RL on December 4 that gunmen opened fire at a vehicle carrying Tetsu Nakamura, a 73-year-old physician who headed a Japanese charity focused on improving irrigation and agriculture in Afghanistan, in the provincial capital, Jalalabad.

A spokesperson for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called Nakamura "one of the closest friends of Afghanistan".

"Sadly, Dr Nakamura has passed away from the wounds he received in the armed attack this morning", Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province, told AFP news agency.

The attack comes after a grenade attack on a United Nations vehicle in Kabul last month killed an American working for the United Nations and wounded five Afghans.

Nakamura was seriously wounded and was reported to be in critical condition immediately after the attack in the provincial capital.

In Fukuoka, southwestern Japan, where the charity is based, the organization's spokesman Mitsuji Fukumoto lauded Nakamura's work.

He "dedicated his life to helping and cooperating with our people", spokesperson Sediq Seddiqi said.

Peshawar-kai was founded by associates of Nakamura, who had lived and worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan since 1984 when he went to treat leprosy patients among Afghan refugees.

Off to a bad start, and dealing with multiple injuries in the frontcourt, the Trail Blazers were in desperate need of a boost. George tied his season high by making 6 of 7 3-pointers, some arcing like rainbows on their way into the net.

Fond of sporting Pashtun dress, Nakamura was an outspoken opponent of the 2001 US-led war that ousted the Taliban regime, whom he defended as able administrators.

"True happiness for mankind should be realised not through violence or money, but in a humane way".

Nakamura had also heavily been involved in the construction of wells and irrigation in villages where many suffered from cholera and other diseases due to a lack of clean water.

"I saw there were gunmen attacking a Japanese and his security guards", he said.

Photos from the scene showed a white pickup truck with a large cabin.

The Taliban, who along with the Islamic State group, operate across the province, denied involvement in Wednesday's attack. No one claimed responsibility for that attack, but both the Taliban and the IS affiliate have been behind such attacks.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted that the insurgent group "has no connection" to Wednesday's shooting and does not consider the Japanese charity a target in the holy war the Taliban are waging to create an Islamic emirate.

Also in the capital, the Taliban in May targeted Counterpart International, a US -funded non-profit group working with marginalised people.
