They said there had been no signs of the building's weakness so many were caught unawares.

St. John Ambulance Kenya, which is also part of the rescue effort, tweeted "at least five people including a child evacuated to hospital".

"We do not have a figure yet", Peter Abwao, Kenya Red Cross Communications Manager, said, adding that teams were still on the ground combing through the rubble.

The building's owner was "not available" said Njenga and did not live in the building.

"Tragedy has struck us again", public works official Gordon Kihalangwa said.

The collapsed Tassia residential flat in Embakasi is believed to have occurred as a result of the heavy rains experienced across the Country and obvious poor foundation of the structure.

The floods dashed hopes of finding survivors, with rescuers reporting that a trapped woman they were communicating with was no longer responding. The National Construction Authority found that 58 percent of buildings in Nairobi were unfit for habitation.

In 2016, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an audit that covered most parts Nairobi suburbs.

At least three people were killed and 27 others injured on Friday when a residential building collapsed in Embakasi in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Friday morning, Reuters reported citing police.
