  • Hong Kong people protest against United States intervention in Hong Kong affairs

"These U.S. NGOs provide funds, materials and training support to anti-Beijing activists in Hong Kong, instigating them to indulge in extreme acts of violence, crimes and "pro-independence" separatist activities", said Hua.

Almost 100 people gathered Tuesday afternoon at Chater Garden in Central, Hong Kong to protest against the US administration's signing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 into law.

The Chinese Communist Party reacted angrily to its signing.

Lam will visit Beijing on December 16 and meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hong Kong broadcaster Cable TV said on Tuesday, citing sources.

Tang will pay a "courtesy visit" to Beijing, where he will call on the Ministry of Public Security, meet with counterparts and discuss the security situation, the Hong Kong government said in a statement.

Cheng, who returned to Hong Kong from Beijing on Tuesday, told reporters at the airport that she had suffered a bone fracture around her wrist and had an operation in London.

Hua also announced that Beijing will impose sanctions on several human rights organizations of non-US government which has been monitoring and reporting on protests in Hong Kong.

The crisis has struck retail sales, which plummeted by their steepest on record in October as protests scared off tourists and struck spending.

Protesters are demanding universal suffrage, an investigation into alleged police brutality and an end to China's perceived efforts to roll back the democratic freedoms promised when the former British colony was handed back in 1997.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) targeted by sanctions include Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, the National Endowment for Democracy, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and the International Republican Institute.

The new law directs the U.S. State Department to conduct an annual review to determine whether Hong Kong has retained enough autonomy from China to maintain its special trading status with the United States. The visit comes after China has denied previous such port calls in 2018.

The bill was later withdrawn, but the protests continued, and took on violent forms.

Ryan McMaken, senior editor at the Mises Institute, said though passage and signing of the pro-democracy legislation was a nice gesture, it was more a show for USA voters than anything that will lead to direct support for the demonstrators. A day earlier, police fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters.
