  • Man who ate $120000 banana at art show says 'I'm not sorry'

In the clip of him eating the banana, Datuna can be heard saying: "Art performance. hungry artist".

Organizers previously said the banana could be replaced if needed.

Datuna insisted that, by eating the banana, he created art too.

New York City-based David Datuna waltzed up to Cattelan's "Comedian", which had already been sold for a whopping amount, on Saturday and pulled the duct tape from the wall before unpeeling the banana and taking a bite.

Performance artist David Datuna shook up the crowd at the Art Basel show in Miami Beach when he grabbed a $120,000 piece of art and ate it. And I just ate the concept of the artist. "With respect, Mauricio, but it's art performance".

"It wasn't vandalism, it was art performance from me and absolutely I am not sorry", Datuna said during a press conference on Monday.

"I really love this installation".

The video raked up a lot of buzz on the internet with people going at the lengths of calling David Datuna a "hero".

"The gallery took all my information and the police took all my information", he said.

Art Basel is a for-profit, privately owned and managed, global art fair held annually in Switzerland, Florida and Hong Kong.

"When we saw the public debate [the Cattelan piece] sparked about art and our society, we made a decision to purchase it". This morning, following recommendations, we removed the installation at 9am. Art Basel collaboratively worked with us to station guards and create uniform lines. And it has been the source of no small amount of gawking over the past few days since news started getting out that the piece-acquirable in an edition with a certificate of authenticity-had sold a couple of times for $120,000. However, the installation caused several uncontrollable crowd movements and the placement of the work on our booth compromised the safety of the artwork around us, including that of our neighbors. We would like to warmly thank all those who participated in this memorable adventure, as well as to our colleagues. "Tampa's finest piece of art work is on display at TPD". The banana is the idea.
