  • AB de Villiers wants to come out of international retirement eyes T20 World Cup return

If AB de Villiers' supporters think he could march straight back into South Africa's dressing room at the T20 World Cup, they will be disappointed.

South African batting great AB de Villiers has confirmed his intention to come out of global retirement for this year's T20 World Cup in Australia.

Because of the recent upheaval in CSA, Mark Boucher was appointed as the new head coach, Smith as the new director and Jacques Kallis was recruited as the new batting consultant.

"There's a lot that needs to happen before that becomes reality", De Villiers said.

'I would love to. I've been talking to Bouch (Boucher), Graeme Smith and Faf (Du Plessis) back home. we're all keen to make it happen.

"It's a long way away still, and plenty can happen - there's the IPL coming up, I've still got to be in form at that time".

"So I'm thinking of throwing my name in the hat and hoping that everything will work out".

After scoring 40 from 32 in his Big Bash League (BBL) 's debut for Brisbane Heat against Adelaide Strikers, De Villiers said that he would love to come out of retirement for the mega event.

De Villiers, now playing with Brisbane in the Big Bash League, still has a desire to play for his country though and says the arrival of former teammate Mark Boucher as coach might help it happen.

"They understand what players go through, especially players that have played for 15 years internationally", de Villiers said. The right-handed batsman had announced his retirement from global cricket in 2018 owing to workload. His comments also made it more or less clear that the possibility of a sensational return to worldwide cricket seems more feasible.

AB de Villiers had retired from global cricket in May 2018 citing exhaustion as the reason.

"There are a lot of players (involved with CSA) who I used to play with", he continued.

"It doesn't mean that everything is going to be sunshine and roses but it's definitely a lot easier and it feels comfortable, the language that's being used and just the feel that everyone has at the moment in South Africa about the cricket", he added. Now, with the T20 World Cup in less than ten months, plans seem to be in place to facilitate his return. He played 114 Tests, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20Is in which he scored 20,014 runs.
