  • Missouri State hires Petrino as football coach

Missouri State has hired Bobby Petrino as its new coach, the school announced Wednesday morning.

The Springfield-based university said Wednesday that Petrino, 58, will be introduced at a news conference Thursday.

Petrino replaces Dave Steckel, who parted ways with the school last week after going 13-42 in five seasons at Missouri State.

"We have one of the top football programs in the country and a lot of that goes to coach Petrino", said Jeff Long, Arkansas' Athletic Director at the time.

He also spent part of one season coaching the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, where he coached 13 games in 2007 before abruptly resigning. However, after a 3-10 start, Petrino resigned in the middle of the season and returned to college football in 2008 at Arkansas. He left to coach the Falcons, where he failed to last even one season.

Petrino is 119-56 overall as a college head coach and has led his teams to five bowl-game victories in 11 appearances.

"I think Bob Petrino showed remorse". He left the Arkansas job after a motorcycle accident exposed an extra-marital affair.

After trying to cover up the exact circumstances of the crash, it was revealed that Petrino was riding on the motorcycle with a former Arkansas volleyball player who was hired as a staffer for the football program and that the two were in a romantic relationship. In 2014 he resurfaced at Western Kentucky where went 8-4 before leaving for his second tenure at Louisville.

Petrino's Cardinals were a disaster a season ago.

He had initial success at Louisville. Sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson, now a standout with the Baltimore Ravens, won the Heisman Trophy, and Louisville shared the ACC's Atlantic Division title with Clemson.

After just a year at Louisville, Petrino interviewed in secret at Auburn about taking the team's head coaching job.

Petrino, meanwhile, hasn't coached since he was sacked by Louisville during the 2018 season. The university agreed to pay the remaining $14 million on his contract.

So Petrino's coaching credentials come with some heavy baggage that's sure to raise some eyebrows.

Petrino, who grew up in Montana, was an assistant coach at Carroll College (in Montana, for his father), Weber State, Idaho, Arizona State, Nevada, Utah State, Louisville, the Jacksonville Jaguars and finally Auburn.

Steckel's firing was somewhat surprising because Missouri State's athletic director, Kyle Moats, said in November the university meant to honor Steckel's contract through 2021.
