Space officials were scrambling to "analyse" the date after the glitch which followed smooth launch from the Far East of Russian Federation.

Russian Federation says it has lost contact with the Meteor-M weather satellite launched early this morning from its new Vostochny spaceport.

"During the first planned communication session with the satellite, it was not possible to establish a connection due to its absence in the target orbit", Roscosmos said in the statement.

Russian Federation spent billions building the new launch pad as a possible alternative to the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan that Moscow has leased from its former Soviet neighbour.

The Soyuz delivery spacecraft was carrying its Meteor M2-1 satellite, a new weather instrument that was being sent on a five-year mission to collect data for the country's weather agency, Roshydromet. In addition to the satellites from Spire Global and Astro Digital, six other CubeSat spacecraft from Russia, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Japan were being carried as secondary payloads. The satellite Meteor, launched from the Vostochny spaceport on Tuesday, is absent from the designated orbit and there is no contact with it, the Roscosmos corporation has said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the inaugural launch of a Soyuz 2 rocket.

The Vostochny spaceport was opened in April 2016, but has been dogged by corruption and spending crises. However, an automatic system initially halted the launch two minutes before the engines were set to start, forcing Roscosmos to delay the launch for a full day.
