Alfa Romeo make Formula One return after 30 years

Speaking about the new arrangement, FCA boss Sergio Marchionne said, "This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years". To be in place from the beginning of the 2018 season, the deal will see Sauber will go under the new name of Alfa Romeo Sauber F1, as well as run Alfa Romeo branding and a new vehicle livery.

It is believed that the newly formed Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team will now be a Ferrari B team, functioning in the same way that Red Bull and Toro Rosso function.

The move back into F1 has come after Alfa Romeo's introduction of crucial new production vehicle models, the Stelvio and Giulia, and looks set to be the next step in the brand's rejuvenation.

"We are very pleased to welcome Alfa Romeo to the Sauber F1 Team", Sauber Holding AG chairman Pascal Picci said in a statement.

Legendary history indeed. Alfa having won the first two drivers' world championships, in 1950 and 1951 - the latter with none other than Juan Manuel Fangio behind the wheel - before going on to enjoy further success in the sport. The Ferrari-powered team will be known as Alfa Romeo Sauber. The Group's businesses also include Comau (production systems), Magneti Marelli (components) and Teksid (iron and castings).

It'll be entering a very different world to the one it left, of course, with hybrid engines, halo devices and - dare we mention it again - that logo. Using the Alfa deal to place him with Sauber would give Ferrari an opportunity to evaluate him in F1.

The partnership had been rumored for much of the summer, especially considering that FIAT Chrysler owns power unit supplier Ferrari.

Sauber has been in F1 since 1993 but has struggled lately, finishing tenth and last in the 2017 season which ended on Sunday. The team's state of the art factory houses manufacturing facilities and offices spanning an area of 15,600 square meters and boasts one of the most advanced wind tunnels in F1. Sauber will be hoping to benefit, if indirectly, from some of that speed.
