Microsoft is planning the most drastic change to their Redmond campus since 2006.
A blog post by Microsoft president Brad Smith said the expansion, which is scheduled to begin in autumn next year, would also include public spaces, sports fields and green spaces.
Microsoft plans to move all cars to an underground parking facility and is designing the campus entirely around pedestrians and bikes.
Microsoft says the investment will involve approximately 2,500 construction jobs and will benefit the overall Puget Sound community, which includes the Washington cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Everett. The campus will include space for up to 55,000 employees-Microsoft now employs 47,000 people in the Redmond area. As 18 new buildings would be constructed on the Microsoft Redmond Campus, 12 older buildings would be bulldozed.
