Microsoft is planning the most drastic change to their Redmond campus since 2006.

A blog post by Microsoft president Brad Smith said the expansion, which is scheduled to begin in autumn next year, would also include public spaces, sports fields and green spaces.

Microsoft plans to move all cars to an underground parking facility and is designing the campus entirely around pedestrians and bikes.

Microsoft says the investment will involve approximately 2,500 construction jobs and will benefit the overall Puget Sound community, which includes the Washington cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Everett. The campus will include space for up to 55,000 employees-Microsoft now employs 47,000 people in the Redmond area. As 18 new buildings would be constructed on the Microsoft Redmond Campus, 12 older buildings would be bulldozed.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), meanwhile, has built over the last decade a dense, a high-rise urban campus that has completely transformed Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, and more recently, the northern edge of downtown. Following the opening of Apple's new spaceship campus in Cupertino, it seems that it also was an opportunity for Microsoft that it represents one of the best workplaces in the tech sector. The campus will also be connected to WA-520 on both sides and it will tie into the future Redmond Technology Transit Station linking the campus to Link Light Rail in 2023.

As our employees create the tools and services of the future workspace for our customers, it's important they have a campus that reflects that future for themselves.

Microsoft announced the development to employees Tuesday evening. Microsoft said this will foster creativity and innovation.
