While other teams like the Tigers and Phillies long ago hired a new manager, the Yankees have taken their time.

His answer, unsurprisingly, was yes. Beltran said he first heard from Cashman three days ago about interviewing for the job, although he floated the idea of returning to the organization while he was still playing. "I personally feel that when I first retired from baseball, I thought I was going to be able to spend a little time with the family, but the fact that I got the call to be interviewed, this is something that you can not turn away from it". He understands the pressure of playing in NY, having done so with both the Yankees and Mets.

Those conversations continued after the postseason, during which Beltran won his first World Series title, with the Houston Astros.

Late in his Hall-of-Fame caliber playing career, Carlos Beltran felt a responsibility to positively impact the kids coming up the chain.

At the time of his retirement announcement, Beltran said he would at some point like to become a manager and that chance might come sooner than later.

During this past season, Beltran told Cashman that he would be retiring at the end of the season and that he would be interested in having a role in the Yankees organization. It's a lot of information that you have to digest. "With the experience that I have in the game of baseball, the times I've played, different teams that I've played for, I've gotten to see different ways to do things in the clubhouse and for the players". Most importantly, the part that we're discussing is an opportunity to be a manager and to manage a team that has so much tradition.

Before interviewing, Beltran spoke to ex-Mets GM Omar Minaya, asking what types of questions he should expect.

For Beltran and the Yankees, the future could be now.

Carlos Beltran will rely on his own experience - and perhaps that of a veteran bench coach - if he lands the Yankees' managerial job. Beltran has at least one enthusiastic supporter in his court: former teammate CC Sabathia, who said (via Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record), "His baseball IQ is off the charts". He described his relationship with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman as "solid" and "professional", revealing that he expressed his interest in managing prior to a Yankees-Astros game this past season.
