  • Washington state sues Uber for millions over data breach cover up

Under Washington's revised data breach law, businesses are required to notify consumers within 45 days if their personal information was accessed by an unauthorized person.

"We filed this lawsuit because Uber must be held accountable for its actions which have made its customers vulnerable to identity theft, fraud, and other abuse", said Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, according to WLS-TV.

The data breach resulted in almost 11,000 Washington Uber drivers having their data compromised.

Uber has confirmed that 2.7 million United Kingdom customers had their personal details stolen in a 2016 cyber attack. With investigations under way by the attorneys general of Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, and NY, there will likely be more on this front soon. It involved names, mobile-phone numbers and email addresses, the ride-hailing firm told the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). If that penalty were applied to each of the affected drivers in Washington, it would total almost $22 million in penalties. Uber failed to notify the attorney general's office until the 21st of November which was more than year after the initial breach happened, which was a result of Uber paying hush money to the hackers to destroy the data. "Consumers expect and deserve protection from disclosure of their personal information".

The Data Privacy Act penalizes the concealment of security breaches involving sensitive information with imprisonment ranging from 18 months to five years and a fine of not less than PHP500,000.

Last week, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi revealed the massive breach that took place under his embattled predecessor, Travis Kalanick, and The New York Times later reported that the company had paid a $100,000 ransom to the hackers responsible in an effort to sweep the incident under the rug.

Uber has been forced to quit several countries, including Denmark and Hungary, and faced regulatory battles in multiple US states and around the world.

"We are monitoring the affected accounts and have flagged them for additional fraud protection", the company said.

Ferguson announced the state's lawsuit hours after developments in a California court case revealed that federal prosecutors are investigating allegations that Uber deployed an espionage team to plunder trade secrets from its rivals.
