The company has been pushing the device as "Desh ka smartphone" and is clearly aimed at appealing to the masses. But from the looks of it, Xiaomi is looking to capture small-town India with its new offering.

Redmi 5A 2GB RAM variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 4999 for the first five million units variant. The Redmi 5A will become available via Mi.com, Flipkart, and Mi Home stores starting on December 7, while Xiaomi's partners will sell it offline as well, soon.

As far as the design is concerned, both the devices come with a plastic design. Enter Xiaomi's new Redmi 5A.

While the Redmi 5A is officially priced at Rs 5999 for the 2GB/16GB variant, Xiaomi has chose to grant a Rs 1000 discount to the first 5 million buyers. The Redmi 5A has a metallic matte finish on the back that's smooth to the touch and because the rear seamlessly wraps around its front, the phone feels all the more comfortable in the hands. The company has packed a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC clocked at up to 1.4 GHz along with Adreno 308 GPU to handle graphics-intensive tasks.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A sports a 5-inch HD IPS display with the resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is also one of the few smartphones to offer dedicated slots for two SIM cards and a microSD card. Secondly, Xiaomi is also introducing a 3GB RAM/32GB storage version of the Redmi 5A in India.

As for the cameras, every budget smartphone manages to perform average and the Redmi 5A seems to be no exception. However, what's new here is the operating system - it runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat-based MIUI 9, which is the latest version of Xiaomi's proprietary operating system. 5A comes with a 5 MP camera module with f/2.2 aperture on the front of the device for selfies. The Redmi 4A also has a 5MP selfie camera, but the aperture size is different at f/2.2.

Users interested in buying the 3 GB RAM with 32 GB internal storage variant can get the device for Rs 6,999.

The official Xiaomi account on Weibo posted the above image with some information regarding the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus launch. The company has launched two variants of the smartphone with the first one packing 2 GB RAM with 16 GB internal storage and the second one packing 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage.
