  • One third of the workforce in richer nations like Germany and the US may need to retrain for other jobs. Machine operators and food workers will be hit hardest

A new study was conducted by McKinsey Global Institute which give the assessments that between 400 million and 800 million of today's jobs will be computerized by 2030.

A new report from the global consulting firm McKinsey and Co. says heavy government investment in job training, education and unemployment assistance will be needed to mitigate automation's costs to labor.

According to the report, "there are few precedents in which societies have successfully retrained such large numbers of people".

The impact will vary between countries, depending on their wealth and types of jobs that now exist in each.

The report studied 46 countries and over 800 occupations.

India is set to see a further 30 percent-to-40 percent reduction of jobs in the manufacturing sector compared with a year ago, according to TeamLease Services Ltd., one of the country's biggest recruitment firms. For Japan, the number is nearly 50 percent of the workforce, while in China it's 12 percent. However, McKinsey estimates less than 5 percent of jobs can be fully automated.

Jobs are at risk across a number of sectors, from machine operation to data collection, due to the varied application of emerging automated technologies.

"Income support and other forms of transition assistance to help displaced workers find gainful employment will be essential", the study says. "As incomes rise, consumers spend more on all categories", the report says.

It added that workers should not hold fears about the availability of work in the future, as technology creates new jobs - particularly in education, financial services and healthcare.

Many countries are getting older as well - Japan is a notable example.

The reports says "unpredictable" jobs such as gardeners, plumbers or providers of child and elderly care are also less likely to see automation over the next decade, as they remain challenging to automate and don't usually earn high wages.

Of course there will be new kinds of jobs, too, McKinsey's research arm said.

"The unprecedented level of digital change our businesses are experiencing is having a sizeable impact on the skills the workforce and the evolving job market require for the economy of tomorrow", said Paul Cant, Vice President of EMEA at BMC Software.
