80% of cardiovascular disease can be associated with well-known risk factors such as age, gender, blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoking, but it is uncertain what influences the remaining 20%, says the new study's report.
Married people are more than 40 per cent less likely to suffer or die from heart disease than those who are not, according to a study.
Cardiovascular disease causes more than a quarter of all deaths in the United Kingdom - 150,000 a year.
"Marital status appears to be a risk factor for heart disease and stroke and should be assessed when assessing cardiovascular risk", Martha Gulati, a co-author of the study and the chair of the Department of Cardiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, said in a statement.
While there was no difference in the risk of death following a stroke between the married and the unmarried, this was not the case after a heart attack, the risk of which was significantly higher (42%) among those who had never married.
A combined review of the data indicated that unmarried, divorcees, or widowers were at higher risk (42%) of getting coronary artery or heart disease (16%) in comparison with married people.

"What this study shows is that medics should think about what additional risk this gives the patient both in developing their first heart attack or stroke, or having better long-term outcomes".
