Seven rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile-defense system, and three failed to make it out of Gaza.

The military said the group was operating out of the northern Gaza Strip and attempted to fly kites carrying incendiary devices into Israel.

As warning sirens wailed around 5:30 a.m., at least five rockets fired from the Hamas-controlled region touched down inside Israeli towns near the Gaza border, with one rocket hitting outside a kindergarten.

A Hamas spokesman said that, as part of a policy of "bombardment for bombardment", the barrages were retaliation for an earlier Israeli air strike.

Around 45 rockets were fired overnight from Gaza towards Israel, the army said in a statement.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem told CNN that the rockets were a response to previous Israeli shelling.

Israeli warplanes struck Hamas positions in Gaza after Palestinian militants there fired dozens of rockets and mortars at southern communities early Wednesday, the military said.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned this week that Israel will not allow Palestinian terror groups to continue launching incendiary devices into Israeli territory. The Israeli military responded with airstrikes.

The pre-dawn exchange of fire comes at an especially tense time as around 130 Palestinians have been killed along the Gaza border in recent months as Palestinians stage mass demonstrations there.

Emerging during the recent weeks of border protests and clashes that began on March 30 the "fire kites" affixed with Molotov cocktails and fire-bombs have quickly became a popular way for Palestinians to inflict millions of shekels worth of damage on Israel without putting themselves in danger.

Also, its two-month campaign against the Gaza border fence resulted in the death of some 160 Arabs, majority Hamas terrorists, with nothing tangible to show for it.

Israel's hi-tech response and use of deadly tactics in confronting the weekly Friday protests have drawn worldwide condemnation. The US and Australia cast the only "no" votes. The Trump administration is reportedly working on a peace plan for the decades-long conflict. The meeting came less than a day after the Jordanian monarch hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a short but rare visit.
