Mexico's foreign minister Luis Videgaray on Tuesday called the separation of children from immigrant parents at the US-Mexico border "cruel and inhumane" and urged the United States to reconsider the practice.
Videgaray said the Mexican government was aware of 21 Mexican children who have been separated from parents.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says in statement that the minor who has Down Syndrome and was separated from her parent isn't related to the zero tolerance policy.
But providing the children with qualified caretakers won't be the solution to immigration many are looking for, with top Republicans having said there had been progress on a legislative solution to the separation of illegal immigrant children from their parents at the border.
The Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy, which has forced the separations of approximately 2,000 undocumented children from their families at the border, has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans. All but seven of those have been repatriated. So far, fewer than 25 of the roughly 2,000 children separated by the Trump administration - or about 1 percent - are Mexican, he said, noting that the vast majority have come from the Central American countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.
Videgaray said Mexico would be working closely with the Central American governments.
Outrage has been spreading quickly over a policy that has taken migrant children from their parents and put them in desert tent camps and in chain-link cages. Most of these Mexican children have already been deported.
"The facilities that they have for the most part are not licensed for tender age children", said Michelle Brane, director of migrant rights at the Women's Refugee Commission, who met with a 4-year-old girl in diapers in a McAllen warehouse where Border Patrol temporarily holds migrant families.
