Mexico's foreign minister Luis Videgaray on Tuesday called the separation of children from immigrant parents at the US-Mexico border "cruel and inhumane" and urged the United States to reconsider the practice.
Videgaray said the Mexican government was aware of 21 Mexican children who have been separated from parents.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says in statement that the minor who has Down Syndrome and was separated from her parent isn't related to the zero tolerance policy.
But providing the children with qualified caretakers won't be the solution to immigration many are looking for, with top Republicans having said there had been progress on a legislative solution to the separation of illegal immigrant children from their parents at the border.
The Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy, which has forced the separations of approximately 2,000 undocumented children from their families at the border, has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans. All but seven of those have been repatriated. So far, fewer than 25 of the roughly 2,000 children separated by the Trump administration - or about 1 percent - are Mexican, he said, noting that the vast majority have come from the Central American countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.
Videgaray said Mexico would be working closely with the Central American governments.
Outrage has been spreading quickly over a policy that has taken migrant children from their parents and put them in desert tent camps and in chain-link cages. Most of these Mexican children have already been deported.

Trump lashed back at Mexico on Tuesday, saying the country does "nothing for us" in terms of stopping illegal immigration into the United States. In the first year of the Trump administration, the number of border crossers detained by USA authorities has fallen.
However, the policy of seeking to prosecute all those caught entering illegally - and in the process separating adults from their children - has been greeted by widespread rejection around the world. A spokesman for the French government, Benjamin Griveaux, told a French television station that Europe and the United States "do not share the same model of civilization; clearly we don't share certain values".
