Perth Zoo officials stated that the Malaysian government gave the Sumatran orangutan as a New Year's Eve gift to an Australia zoo in 1968.
The matriarch of Perth Zoo's Sumatran Orangutan colony was the oldest living Orangutan in the world.
Puan, whose name translates to "Lady" in Indonesian, played an essential role at the Perth Zoo.
Puan has been a key member in orangutan breeding programs for most of her life. Twenty-nine of those descendants are still alive, with Puan's genetics accounting for almost 10 percent of the global zoological population, Thompson added.
She has 54 descendants, 29 still alive and spread across Australia, the US, Europe, Singapore and Sumatra.
In the year 2016, she was officially recognised as the oldest of her species by Guinness World Records.
According to the zoo, Sumatran orangutans rarely live beyond the age of 50.
A statement from the Perth Zoo said Puan would be remembered by zoo staff as an "aloof individual who lived her life on her terms".

At the Perth Zoo, Puan leaves behind two daughters, four grandchildren and a great grandson.
Zookeeper Martina Hart, who has known Puan for 18 years, penned a heartfelt farewell to the orangutan who left behind an "incredible legacy". "She was a attractive independent lady whose legacy is unparalleled", Holly was quoted as saying.
"Puan demanded and deserved respect, and she certainly had it from all her keepers over the years".
Buan was treated to the sight of Sumatran orangutans, which, to date, there are about 14.6 thousand.
Behind the collapse in primate numbers is an increase in industrial agriculture.
