US President Donald Trump on Sunday said migrants who "invade" the US should be deprived of legal due process, reinforcing his hardline stand despite an about-face on family separations that has seen more than 500 children reunited with relatives.

It was another twist in an already head-spinning series of developments on immigration after the president reversed a policy last week that had resulted in the separation of more than 2,300 children from their families.

Sessions says the compassionate thing to do is protect children from violence and drugs, put criminals in jail and secure borders.

The U.S. military said on Thursday it had been asked by the government to get ready to house up to 20,000 immigrant children.

A coalition of civil rights, religious and union activists opposed to President Donald Trump's immigration policies are gearing up for a protest in Nevada outside a school safety conference where U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is the keynote speaker.

Congress is set to vote on two Republican-backed immigration bills this coming week.

Some of the protesters told the outlet that they hoped their demonstrations draw attention to the administration's handling of immigrant families and children at the southern border.

ICE has posted information in all its facilities to help parents locate and communicate with children in HHS custody by calling a help line that is staffed by live operators for 12 hours a day Monday through Friday, according to the statement.

The tweets closely follow the Saturday night release of a "fact sheet" by the Department of Homeland Security, meant to outline the administration's plan for family reunification. Some parents said they did not even know where their children were.

Numerous parents are being released "so that they can begin the process of regaining custody from (the Office of Refugee Resettlement) of their children", the spokesman said. Children have been sent to shelters around the country, raising alarm that parents might never know where their children can be found.

The statement said a "small number of children" that were separated for reasons other than zero tolerance will remain separated, listing general reasons for that being if the familial relationship can not be confirmed, if the adult is believed to be a threat to the child or if the adult is a "criminal."Migrants are first detained in CBP custody when they are apprehended at the border".
