Walgreens pharmacist denies mom miscarriage drug for fetus with no heartbeat

"I can't give you this one, '" Arteaga said.

She said that Walgreens had not reached out to her to apologise, but that a store manager said she was sorry when Ms Mone telephoned to flag up the incident a day later.

She told BuzzFeed News that she was 9-weeks pregnant and her baby did not have a heartbeat.

"I stood at the mercy of this pharmacist explaining my situation in front of my seven-year-old and five customers standing behind only to be denied because of his ethical beliefs", Ms Mone wrote.

"I will not tolerate the possibility of one of us, or my children, being denied life-saving medication because some pharmacist with less education than I makes a personal moral call about the medication our DOCTORS feel is warranted".

"I had a hard time getting to sleep with all these thoughts going through my mind about how a person could control or have control over something that I needed for my well being", she told Buzzfeed News. When she said she was, he refused to give her the misoprostol, citing "his ethical beliefs", she recalled in a detailed account on Facebook.

Kelli Garcia, director of reproductive justice initiatives and senior counsel at the National Women's Law Center, told BuzzFeed News that Arizona is one of six US states where pharmacists can refuse to serve customers on religious or ethical grounds.

Nicole Arteaga, 36, said she received the heartbreaking news that she was miscarrying during her 10-week check-up, The Arizona Republic reported Saturday.

Ultimately, Arteaga left in tears - without the medication.

A representative for Walgreens said someone reached out to Arteaga to apologize for how the situation was handled.

The mum wrote she shared her story so no other "vulnerable and already suffering" women had to go through what she experienced in the store. "We are looking into the matter to ensure that our patients" needs are handled properly'.

"The world felt like it was closing in and I was thinking, this is my body and I'm losing control", she said. And, she wants a law in place that would require pharmacies to fill prescriptions approved by doctors.

Arteaga explained that there were other pharmacists at the Walgreens when the man denied filling her prescription, yet he did not refer her medical needs to another employee.

She's also contacted the Walgreens corporate office and filed a complaint with the Arizona Board of Pharmacy, which licenses pharmacists in her state.

"He has no idea what its like to want nothing more than to carry a child to full term and be unable to do so", she wrote. "Thank you to those who have shown love and support", she said. "Do they work for Walgreens or for themselves?"

The store defended itself on Twitter, saying that pharmacists can "step away" from filling a prescription if they have a "moral objection". "At the same time, they are also required to refer the prescription to another pharmacist or manager on duty to meet the patient's needs in a timely manner".

Walgreens' policy lines up with an Arizona state law that similarly allows a pharmacy, hospital or health professional not to participate in providing abortion medication, emergency contraception or any medication or device that would prevent fertilization.

"On receiving this notification, the pharmacy must attempt to accommodate the employee if the accommodation can be made without causing undue hardship to the pharmacy or its customers".
