The last time the survey was conducted seven years ago, India was considered the fourth most risky country for women.

Nigeria is also ranked fourth position on the poll in matters of human trafficking.
The country didn't learn any lessons from the brutal rape and murder case of a student in December 2012, which had then triggered widespread protests and forced the government to amend its rape laws.
India has long grappled with the issue of sexual violence.

The foundation, according to CBS News, said the ranking resulted from the publicity surrounding the #MeToo movement and the discussion about sexual misconduct in the United States. The poll cited high risk of sexual violence against women as the main reason for country's abysmal record in providing the safety and security to women.
"We wanted to find out whether more was being done to address the overall risks faced by women, and specifically regarding healthcare, access to economic resources, customary practices, sexual violence, non-sexual violence and human trafficking", the description read.

In 2011, the foundation did its first such perception poll that found Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia the most unsafe countries for women around the world. They were asked to name five of the 193 United Nations member states they thought were most risky for women.
According to NDTV, India's Ministry of Women and Child Development declined to comment on the survey results.
The same poll conducted in 2011 had placed India at the fourth place.
"World leaders vowed three years ago to eliminate all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls by 2030, allowing them to live freely and safely to participate equally in political, economic and public life".
