  • Thursday's announcement comes after Optus responded to complaints by giving SBS broadcast rights for 48 hours last week

Australian soccer fans will be able to enjoy the rest of the 2018 World Cup for free after Optus Sport agreed to let public broadcaster SBS continue their coverage for the duration of the tournament.

SBS will broadcast the rest of the World Cup.

"Optus is here to push the boundaries of innovation in Australia and deliver choice to customers", said Lew. Malcolm Turnbull called Optus CEO Allen Lew for a "please explain", and Optus gave up another 48 hours of matches to SBS as an apology.

The telco said on Thursday all remaining games will be shown in conjunction with SBS, and all Australians could access Optus Sport free until August 31. The outrage even reached the offices of the Prime Minister, who demanded an explanation from the company.

SBS sold the rights for most World Cup matches to Optus Sport for a reported $8million - but many fans were unable to watch due to technical problems.

"We found that on Sunday night, the issue that we had was compounded by a failure in the critical part of our content-delivery network, and that made the experience for a large number of Australians worse than it was the previous night", Lew told ZDNet.

The agreement was announced on Thursday.

SBS could not be more happy to receive the rights, continuing to refer to themselves as the "Spiritual home of the World Game" throughout their coverage of the tournament. SBS coverage will continue live from Red Square in Moscow from 5.30pm each match day with Craig Foster and Lucy Zelić offering their expert commentary, as well as commentary from English football commentator Martin Tyler.

Optus obtained the rights to 64 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in May, with 39 of the matches meant to be exclusive to the telecommunications company.

SBS managing director Michael Ebeid welcomed the news saying they had already had eight million viewers tune into the group stages.
