Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Defeats Corporate Democrat in NY Primary

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in NY.

Democratic strategists say Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - the 28-year-old who beat the longtime incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley - is a case study in the kind of insurgent Democrats who could lead a 2018 "blue wave".

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the youngest challenger ever in the Democratic primary in NY. An early profile in the Intercept, she said, was "a game-changer", leading to more interviews and profiles that led with the audacity of her challenge, then got to her policies. "Oh my God, oh my God", she said as she realised she had won, her hands flying to her mouth and her eyes widening.

Democrats need to flip 23 of 435 seats to take over the House of Representatives, which would stymie much of Trump's agenda while opening up new avenues of investigation into his administration. In the Staten Island district of New York City, former Representative Michael Grimm failed in his comeback attempt against the incumbent Dan Donovan.

On CNN, Ocasio-Cortez spoke further about her opposition to ICE and the Trump administration's immigration policy, under which she said secretive children's detention centers are comparable to black sites run by the Central Intelligence Agency. But progressive commentators care less about the numbers game of the horse race and more about whether the party will move left.

District 14 covers parts of the Bronx and Queens, where census numbers show the population is almost half Hispanic - very different from when Crowley first took office 20 years ago, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported.
