A number of flights between Australia and Bali have been cancelled or turned back due to ash from the eruption of the island's Mount Agung.

No other airlines have cancelled flights yet. The airline does not fly to Bali directly from New Zealand but has cancelled flights to Cairns and Perth today and contacted affected passengers.

Qantas also turned back two Melbourne and Sydney flights to the island, and delayed two more from Denpasar.

The AirAsia flight due to land at 7.30pm, QZ536, has also been cancelled.

While flights on other airlines are all now running to schedule, anyone flying into or out of Bali is urged to contact their airline to check if there might be delays or cancellations.

Jetstar said on its travel alerts site on Thursday that it is not now safe to operate flights to or from Denpasar because of the volcanic ash cloud.

Bali closed its global airport following a volcanic eruption on the Indonesian resort island that sent thick smoke and ash billowing 2,000 metres into the air, an official said on Friday (Jun 29).

Agung, about 70 kilometers northeast of Bali's tourist hotspot of Kuta, last had a major eruption in 1963, killing about 1,100 people.

Mount Agung rumbled back to life previous year and has been erupting periodically since.

Activity at the volcano was high last year and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, but it had been quieter this year.
