  • Elon Musk under attack over use of potter's farting unicorn image

Robin Edwards, a musician, was tweeting under her stage name Lisa Prank.

According to Denver publisher Westword, Edwards, a potter who lives in Evergreen, Colorado, created the image in 2010.

He has since released a new line of mugs in revenge, which feature Elon Musk and the words 'Tesla stole my unicorn'. His mug shows a unicorn farting into an intake funnel for a auto.

How did this happen?

Elon Musk's tent-style "Alien Dreadnought" factory is using obsolete production processes to catch up on manufacturing of the Tesla 3 model, new drone footage of the facility has revealed. The reverse side reads, "Electric cars are good for the environment because electricity comes from magic!" Musk tweeted his praise for a mug design by the potter in February 2017.

So he was stunned when, just a month later, Musk tweeted an identical cartoon to promote Tesla's new "sketch pad" feature, which allows drivers to draw via an in-car touchscreen.

Musk even commented on the tweet that the mug was, "maybe my favorite mug ever". A copy of Edwards' farting unicorn drawn on the Tesla sketchpad app. After that, Musk's sketch was used to show the capabilities of the Tesla sketch pad, with the operating system using it as an icon and Tesla even sending it out as a Christmas card.

Mr Edwards told the Guardian that he wanted a positive resolution to this peculiar disruption. History will judge our choices - and by that time, Elon Musk's cryogenically frozen head will likely have fled to outer space - but let it never be said of me that when they came for the farting unicorns, I said nothing.

However, similar images of farting unicorns were used in Tesla in-car interfaces and promotional material. "Please don't take this as a shakedown", the attorney wrote. The enormous tent contains a auto assembly line constructed using spare parts. And when his daughter, Robin Edwards of Lisa Prank, tweeted a link to the story at Elon Musk, they got into it on Twitter.

Musk responded that going forwards he's instructed his team to use a different image, and added that it would be "kinda lame" for Edwards to sue. "If anything, this attention increased his mug sales", he said. But the artist wants actual money.

Musk claims that the image was made by Twitter user Nik Jovanovic, and that it was chosen at random by his software team, "as a joke".

Edwards told Westword that Musk's tweet of his mug resulted in about 100 sales.

Tom Edwards saw the tweet and told Business Insider in an email, "that is the tweet I saw and I assure you I haven't been paid".

Now, before you jump at the prospect of Tesla literally using customers to help build cars and boost production, it's not like that.
