An appeals court in Sudan has overturned the death sentence of a woman who killed her husband after he allegedly raped her, her lawyer says.
Noura Hussein's lawyer Al-Fateh Hussein said a Sudanese court made the decision today, also fining her 375 Sudanese pounds (roughly £15).
Her mother, Zainab Ahmed, told the BBC she was happy her daughter's life had been spared by the appeal court.
Noura Hussein's ordeal sparked global outrage, with activists backing #JusticeforNoura online campaign calling for her release over what they termed extreme disparity in justice for Noura and her late rapist.
The court in Khartoum commuted Noura Hussein's death penalty to five years as well as ordered her to pay blood money to the husband's family. It was reported that the husband brothers and a cousin helped him to rape her for the first time.
"The next morning he tried to rape her again but she managed to escape to the kitchen where she grabbed a knife".
"The Sudanese authorities must take this opportunity to start reforming the laws around child marriage, forced marriage and marital rape so that victims are not the ones who are penalized", said Seif Magango, Amnesty International's Deputy Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes.

The young lady had been married off to her husband at 16 by her father.
Although she tried to wade off the man's advances without success, she was forced to marry him three years later when she turned 18.
Hussein has been held in a women's prison since May 2017. Noura was a victim before she became a criminal.
Sudanese law allows for the marriage of a girl once she hits puberty, and a 10-year-old girl can be married by a guardian with the permission of a judge.
Marital rape is not a crime in Sudan, and girls from 10years and above can legally marry.
Hussein was said to have been handed over to the police by her father after she fled the scene and went back home.
