Following police activity late Thursday around a Laurel apartment complex where the suspect is believed to have resided, officers by 2 a.m. could be seen clearing the scene. CNN reported that the suspect has not been cooperative with police.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is on the scene assisting local authorities, the official said.

"You think something like this might happen in Afghanistan, not in a newsroom a block away from the mall", he said, reflecting on what appeared to be one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in U.S. history.

Authorities said the man entered the building in a targeted attack and "looked for his victims". "I write about this stuff - not necessarily to this extent, but shootings and death - all the time", he said. Hiassen was an assistant editor and columnist.

The Capital-Gazette is a subsidiary of the Baltimore Sun, one of the Tronc's newspapers. Those threats, he said, "indicated violence".

In a series of tweets, DeButts tried to explain what hardworking journalists actually do day after day.

Police said they safely evacuated 170 people from the building, which housed 30 other businesses.

Police in Annapolis are responding to a multi-fatality shooting in the offices of the Capital Gazette newspaper.

They found the suspect hiding under a desk in the building, according to Steve Schuh, am Anne Arundel county executive. "It does not appear to be a particularly well-planned operation".

Police gave no immediate details on the gunman or his motive in the rampage at The Capital Gazette and said he was being interrogated. In 1767, Anne Catharine Green became the first female newspaper publisher in the country and the Maryland Gazette fought the stamp tax that started the American Revolution. I don't know why he stopped, " Davis said. But he praised his hardworking staff, explaining that they do "more with less" and have "a passion for telling stories from our community".

"He waged a one-person attack on anything he could muster in court against the Capital", said Tom Marquardt. The suspect has been apprehended by police and taken into custody.

Live video images showed people leaving the building, walking through a parking lot with their hands in the air. Anne Arundel County police said on Twitter the name of the suspect will be released at a later time. "I was very scared".

Locked in a room with about a dozen others, Foster had sent a text to her daughter: "There's an active shooter".

"I was taking deep breaths", she said. "We could hear them busting out the glass doors and windows. It was so surreal". She told The Capital that she told him to stop, but the emails continued.

One message titled "Open Season" mentioned 2000 Capital Drive, the address of Capital-Gazette Communications, and linked to several articles about the Capital.

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said the community is grieving the attack on the community paper.

Earlier, Hogan tweeted he was "absolutely devastated to learn of this tragedy in Annapolis".

"This person was prepared today to come in. My condolences to everyone impacted at the @capgaznews newsroom".
