Rescue workers are still on the scene trying to rescue a 7-week-old deaf puppy in Huntsville.

Toffee fell into the hole in the backyard of her foster family's home at about 5 p.m. local time on Thursday, setting off a vigorous efforts by the fire department, cave rescue crews and volunteers to save her.

Toffee was trapped for 30-hours but seemed in good spirits when reunited with her foster mum.

"I'm not going to lie, last night I thought there was no hope we were going to get her out alive", Laura Collins West, the puppy's foster mother, told reporters. The effort continued Friday.

The puppy - Toffee - somehow fell down a 50-foot crevice that is only inches wide.

The foster owner says she didn't know about the hole before Toffee fell in. Since then, volunteers, rescue crews and fire officials tried numerous rigs and nets to try to get out safely.

A camera has been placed on the end of a plumbing pipe to watch her and she has been seen resting under a rock out of reach of the items that have been sent down to her.

Huntsville television stations live-streamed the recovery op and the feed drew thousands of followers.

She has been provided with food, water, and ways to stay warm down in the hole.

Toffee is a 7-week-old Australian Shepherd mix.

According to NBC affiliate network WVTM 13, the pet rescue and adoption centre A New Leash on Life is calling for a high-powered generator and lights so the group can work through the night to save the puppy.
