Donald Trump hailed a US Supreme Court ruling a "great victory" after it voted to uphold the US president's travel ban on some Muslim majority countries.
Trump tweeted his response in all caps following the ruling, "SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN".
In his remarks at the White House, Mr Trump reinforced his reasoning for the ban.
Democratic Sen. Chris Coons says the Supreme Court's ruling that President Donald Trump's travel ban is constitutional "doesn't mean that it's right, that it's justified or that it reflects America's values".
The 5-4 ruling comes after several lower courts had acted to limit or suspend the policy, which Trump introduced in January 2017.
Explaining the reason for throwing out the challenge, chief justice John Roberts wrote that presidents have substantial power to regulate immigration.
The ban allows for waivers on a case-by-case basis, but applicants who can not afford an attorney to go through the waiver process will likely be unable to immigrate to the USA, immigration advocates say. "We express no view on the soundness of the policy", he added.
At that point, the Supreme Court canceled its hearing on the previous versions of the order and let the latest policy take effect in December.

Asked if Trump was trying to restrict entry of Muslims or other religious groups into the U.S., Cornyn said, "I think he's trying to keep the country safe". "It appeals to deep-seated misconceptions at the cost of intelligent, productive and carefully constructed national security policy".
During the presidential campaign, Trump called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on". Trump could add more countries to the list.
That triggered chaos and protests across the U.S. as travellers were stopped from boarding global flights and detained at airports for hours.
The third version of Trump's travel ban barred almost all travelers from five mainly Muslim countries, namely Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Siding with the majority, he also urged officials to remember the importance of religious tolerance with a poeticism that some attributed to a man who might not have many opinions left to write. Those countries were targeted because they failed to ensure travel-document integrity and were lax in disclosing information on the criminal history or suspected terrorist ties of their citizens.
In June 2017, the Supreme Court, while hearing an appeal, made a decision to restore parts of the ban, overruling lower courts.
