  • Travelers pass through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. The TSA soon will introduce a rule affecting the size of containers holding powdery substances

Buckle up. The Friday before July 4 may approach a record for the busiest day ever for USA airports, the head of Transportation Security Administration said. TSA says nine of the top 15 days in the past 16 years have occurred since May 2017 and the peak day last year was on the Friday before Independence Day, when 2.65 million people flew.

TSA typically screens about 2.2 million passengers a day.

For those planning to be in the air this busy weekend, TSA says traveling with any fireworks or other explosive devices is prohibited, not even in checked bags.

Beyond Friday, TSA projects that we're entering what will be an incredibly busy travel period.

In total, TSA expects 28.3 million passenger and crewmembers from June 28 through July 9.

The current record was set on the Sunday after Thanksgiving Day in 2004 when TSA screened 2,713,864 people at checkpoints across the U.S.

As if the crush of humanity isn't going to be headache enough, the Fourth of July apparently makes some travelers lose their common sense.

In a news conference Wednesday, TSA Administrator David Pekoske told media outlets there could be an hour wait at some airports, depending on the weather and volume of flyers.

The TSA is encouraging passengers to download the MyTSA app, which provides 24/7 access to airport security information, and consider signing up for TSA Precheck to ensure a smooth airport security experience. They says for months they have been focused on screening of powders at domestic airports.

"There are a range of powders that could be used to irritate or harm aircraft passengers and aircrew if released during flight", said Lisa Farbstein, a TSA spokeswoman.
