  • US special counsel Robert Mueller is leading the investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 US

President Donald Trump brushed aside the question of whether he'll bring up election meddling with Russian President Vladimir Putin when the two leaders meet later this month as National Security Adviser John Bolton warned not to get "vapors" over the summit. "The US does not want, that someone interfered in the elections".

Ahead of the big Trump-Putin summit, Fox News' Chris Wallace spoke with National Security Advisor John Bolton about his recent meeting with Vladimir Putin and the public rhetoric from President Trump on Russian Federation.

Other contentious issues are also likely to come up in the meeting, which will mark the third time the two presidents meet but their first official summit.

The presidents of the United States and Russian Federation will meet in Helsinki on 16 July.

"We're going to talk about Ukraine, we're going to be talking about Syria".

"We'll be talking about elections".

Peskov also said Friday that there was "no specific idea" to invite Trump to the World Cup final match on July 15 in Russian Federation, which is hosting the major global soccer tournament.

Bolton said he discussed concerns about Russian meddling in the USA elections with Putin during his visit to Moscow on Wednesday, citing activities targeting congressional elections coming up in November as well as the 2016 presidential contest.

"So I think it still raises the question, I think the president will want to have a conversation about this and say we don't want to see meddling in the 2018 election", he added. Mr Trump has indicated he wants to end United States involvement in foreign wars.

Trump has previously suggested Russian Federation should be allowed to return to the Group of Seven - formerly Eight - economic powers.

A Cabinet minister said they worry Trump would want to burnish his deal-maker credentials by outlining a plan to reduce military presence around Europe's Eastern boundaries.

Both sides have played down expectations of what the talks can hope to produce, saying the fact that Trump and Putin are meeting at all is an achievement in itself.

Zakaria noted that the location of the Trump-Putin meeting is "an interesting choice", given that the historic Helsinki Accords was signed there. Trump tweeted after that encounter that there no longer was a nuclear threat from North Korea, an assessment that many diplomatic and nuclear experts dispute.

Putin has "repeatedly stated and explained that Crimea can not be and will never be on the agenda because it is an inseparable part of Russia", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
