According to the report which focused on areas such as particulate matter, dust, dirt, smoke, soot and liquid droplets, air pollution contributed to nearly 14 per cent of all new diabetes cases globally in the year 2016.
The measuring line of what is considered to be safe for air pollution by the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States, and the WHO (World Health Organization) are the reason behind the soaring risk diabetes causing globally, as per a study reported to the Lancet Planetary Health journal on Friday. Accordingly, one in seven cases of diabetes is due to air pollution, say researchers in the study's report.
While previous studies have attempted to link the disease to air pollution, the new paper gathered data and quantified the global burden.
Pollution is thought to reduce the body's insulin production, "preventing the body from converting blood glucose into energy that the body needs to maintain health", according to the research.
According to a new research done by Washington University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs (VA) St. Louis Health Care System, air pollution could be the reason behind of the ever-increasing rates of diabetes globally.
'This is important because many industry lobbying groups argue that current levels are too stringent and should be relaxed. "Evidence shows that current levels are still not sufficiently safe and need to be tightened".

For the study, the researchers analysed data from 1.7 million USA veterans, who were monitored for 8.5 years and had no previous history of diabetes. For example, people living in the pollution of 10 micrograms per cubic meter, 21% more likely to suffer from diabetes than the inhabitants of more prosperous regions.
The researchers built a statistical model to see to what extent indoor air pollution could explain why some of the subjects developed diabetes. More than 420 million people are affected by diabetes worldwide, and roughly 30 million people in the United States alone. "We found an increased risk, even at low levels of air pollution now considered safe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO)". Researchers point out that while the 3% increase appears small, it translates into an additional 5,000 to 6,000 new diabetes cases per 100,000 people each year.
Scientists, estimate pollution to have contributed internationally to about 3.2 million new cases of diabetes in 2016 (14% of all incidents worldwide this year).
The results can be found published online in the journal The Lancet Planetary Health.
Air pollution has been more and more associated with type 2 diabetes in recent years, and while the exact mechanisms behind this link are not clear, scientists have suggested that where people live and their income could be noteworthy factors. The U.S. experiences a moderate risk of pollution-related diabetes. They focused their research on particulate matter as these materials can pass into the bloodstream from the lungs, contributing to major health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, or kidney disease.
