Scarlett Johansson joins ‘Ghost in the Shell’ director for ‘Rub & Tug’

The Ghost in the Shell remake was hit with accusations of whitewashing with Johansson cast as the film's cyborg protagonist, who was named Motoko Kusanagi in the original Japanese anime and manga series. This latest controversy concerns Johansson's casting as a trans man despite being a cisgender woman.

The Avengers star will reunite with Rupert Sanders, who directed her performance as a canonically Asian character in Ghost in the Shell - a film which was also accused of queerbaiting and straightwashing - to take on the role of real-life trans man Dante "Tex" Gill in Rub & Tug.

Gill ran a number of mafia-protected massage parlours in the city, which were fronts for prostitution.

Members of the LGBTQ community and their allies saw the casting as insensitive because they preferred that a transgender role be played by a transgender actor.

She also supplied the local National Football League team with anabolic steroids, but as Deadline reports, "it is Jean's fiery romance with her girlfriend Cynthia that truly defines her and forms the emotional core of the story"; the official spin is that the project is comparable to 2013's triple Golden Globe victor "American Hustle".

Scarlett Johansson has caused upset and offence after showing little remorse for taking on the role of a transgender man in a forthcoming film. So why would she take work away from a trans actor?

According to Bustle, when contacted over the backlash, a rep for the actress allegedly said: 'Tell them they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment'.

Tambor, Leto and Huffman have played the roles of transwomen.
