Pakistan former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in jail in Avenfield corruption case by an anti-corruption court on Friday while his daughter Maryam Sharif was sentenced to 7 years in the Avenfield corruption case.
The Pakistan Supreme Court had, on July 28, disqualified Sharif from holding the office of the prime minister and asked the National Accountability Bureau to file references against the Sharif family in connection with corruption cases against them.
The verdict, which has already been postponed once, comes ahead of the general elections in Pakistan on 25 July and will impact the poll prospects of the Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz (PML-N), which is facing stiff competition from Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).
The guilty verdict in absentia against Sharif, 68, threatens to end the career of one Pakistan's most high-profile politicians over the last four decades, a political survivor who served as prime minister on three occasions.
Besides Mr Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar, NAB had also named Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz - Mr Sharif's sons - as accused in all three corruption cases. Nawaz Sharif was also fined 10 million pounds in the case.
Earlier, an accountability court sentenced Nawaz Sharif to ten years in prison and fined him eight million pounds. Assets in question are four expensive flats in London worth over £200 million. He never appeared before the accountability court despite several notices.
"I am not a dictator who will run away from the courts", he said, taking a dig at former Pakistan President and army chief Pervez Musharraf, who has refused to return to the country from the UAE to face a slew of cases against him.

They both denied wrongdoing and are expected to appeal.
Sharif has been in London since last month to take care of his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer.
Sharif has previously described the court proceedings against him as politically motivated and a judicial witchhunt.
Accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir read out the verdict.
The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017.
According to the Joint Investigation Team's report submitted in the Panamagate case, the Sharifs had given contradictory statements about their London flats and found that the flats actually belonged to them since 1993, Pakistani media reported.
