A black OR state representative says one of her constituents called the police on her for canvassing a neighborhood.
Since November 2016 she has represented House District 51, which includes east Portland, Gresham, North Clackamas, Damascus, Boring, and Happy Valley.
In recent months, black people have found themselves the subjects of 911 calls over mundane and innocuous activities, like napping. The caller's race is unknown, the Oregonian reports. Bynum didn't say this was a case of racism, but believes some type of bias was at play.
"It was just freaky", Bynum said.
"It boils down to people not knowing their neighbors and people having a sense of fear in their neighborhoods, which is kind of my job to help eradicate", she said.
Law&Crime reached out to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office but no response was forthcoming at the time of publication.
Bynum said that the deputy who responded was courteous and professional, and even agreed to take a photo with her, which she later posted on her Facebook page.
Bynum said she routinely stops at homes while canvassing to take notes on her cellphone of conversations she has with residents so she can remember them.

A recording of police turning the men out of the branch went viral, and the company apologised for the incident and introduced training to help staff root out racial bias.
The woman said she'd seen Bynum at seven other homes before deciding to call 911 around 4:50 p.m.
