The website aired an audio recording from Mohammed Abu Abdullah, al-Shabaab's governor in the Jubaland region, who said that plastic bags "pose a serious threat to the well-being of humans and animals alike", a statement that was repeated in a Twitter message posted on a Shabaab-associated account.
The announcement was made in a broadcast by Radio Andalus, an official mouthpiece of the militant group.
How the militant group will enforce the bans is still unclear but civilians are expected to obey the rules out of fear due to the group's violent nature.
The Somalia-based group announced this week that it is banning single-use plastic bags in the territories under its control.
The statement banning the use of plastic bags was published on Somalimemo.net, a pro-Shabaab website that is believed to be run by the terrorist group's media office.
About 60 percent of the 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic produced throughout history has ended up as waste, with more than three-fourths of that going into landfills or the natural environment, Geyer estimates.
