Police ‘dig up garden’ of nurse arrested over hospital deaths of babies

A nurse arrested on suspicion of murdering eight babies has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Lucy Letby has been bailed pending further inquiries into her connection to 17 babies' deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital during 2015 and 2016.

Officers have been searching Ms Letby's house in Chester, about a mile from the hospital, and were seen at her parents' property in Hereford. A blue tent was pitched in the driveway and officers guarded the entrance to the house.

Detectives launched an investigation into infant deaths at the hospital in May a year ago, initially looking at the deaths of 15 babies between June 2015 and June 2016.

Police were asked to investigate the deaths of eight babies at Chester in May 2017 - an investigation that has since widened to include nine more.

A nonfatal collapse is when an infant's health severely declines but the child survives.

The woman's name and her exact position at the hospital has not been released by police.

Meanwhile, Mr Hughes, who is leading the investigation, said: 'This is a highly complex and very sensitive investigation and, as you can appreciate, we need to ensure we do everything we possibly can to try to establish in detail what has led to these baby deaths and collapses'.

Neighbors and friends couldn't believe the "kindhearted" and "geeky" Letby, who they said often talked about her gig as a "dream job", had allegedly gone on a baby-killing spree.

"This is an extremely hard time for all the families", Cheshire Police said.

'We are cooperating with police as part of their investigation which includes a routine review of patients cared for on our neonatal unit during the time of these placements.

Detective Hughes said the parents of all the babies are being kept fully updated and supported by specially trained officers while the investigation continues.

Officers from the north west of England are investigating the deaths of 17 infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Lawyers representing two babies who received treatment at the hospital said they were "hopeful" the investigation would provide answers to the families affected.
