Chris Froome says he suffered no serious injuries despite crashing into a field near the end of stage one of the Tour de France. Plagued by suspicions regarding his misuse of asthma-related medicine, the four-time tour victor suffered a start to this morning's Tour that will have undoubtedly pleased many of those fans who had booed Froome and Team Sky earlier this week.

Twice runner-up to Froome in the Tour, Quintana came home a further 24 seconds back and alongside compatriot Egan Bernal of Team Sky, who also crashed in chaotic finale to an otherwise sedate stage.

With grass stains on his right shoulder and blood trickling down his right arm from a gash on his elbow, Froome got back up and crossed 51 seconds behind Fernando Gaviria, the Colombian who claimed the race's first yellow jersey with a commanding sprint victory.

The Kenyan-born British rider also crashed on the opening day of the Giro d'Italia in May, while warming up for the Stage 1 time trial.

On a bittersweet day for Colombia, Nairo Quintana (Movistar) picked up a puncture with four kilometres remaining and had to wait an age for the all-important wheel change. Froome is seeking to defend his title from 12 months ago and become the fifth man to win this Grand Tour five times.
