Though he doesn't have the size of a traditional big, James is one of the most efficient post-up players in the league thanks to his combination of strength and skill.

And with innumerable variables still to be settled before the regular season, it's impossible to predict what James will be able to accomplish with a revamped Lakers roster.

They arguably got a better deal by trading Crowder and Derrick Rose to the Utah Jazz and Iman Shumpert to the Sacramento Kings in a three-team deal that brought them George Hill and Rodney Hood. After the rebuilding Lakers beat James' then Cleveland Cavaliers in a game last March, the team's newest star spoke about the improvement that he has seen since Walton was an assistant and interim head coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2014 to 2016.

Rondo is a familiar figure to Lakers fans, and not necessarily in a good way.

Let's be clear: coming to terms with LeBron James when he is still performing at historic levels, even without having to lure him in by first adding another star player, is a major coup for the Lakers.

The Lakers have already made a number of moves since signing James as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, and Rajon Rondo have all agreed to one-year deals and there are other meetings scheduled. Rather than surrounding LeBron with players who are primarily outside shooters and defensive liabilities, L.A. wants to do things differently.

James didn't stay in the Los Angeles area when he made his free agency decision. Talking with the Spurs about a Kawhi Leonard trade will be Johnson's biggest and most hard task, but if he can get a deal done, LeBron will have his needed sidekick. Mark Gilbert is new to LA and is now a newly minted Lakers fan. His goal is to surpass LeBron James, not to help LeBron win more rings.

Last week, Magic Johnson suggested the Lakers were operating on a two-year plan and would not be rushed into decision this summer, particularly given Leonard, Irving, Klay Thompson and DeAndre Jordan will be unrestricted free agents in 12 months.

When James suits up for the season opener, six of the top eight scorers in National Basketball Association history will be Lakers.
