Le premier ouragan de la saison 2018 dans l'Atlantique, qui se dirige vers les Petites Antilles, a conduit les autorités à émettre une alerte niveau " surveillance ouragan " pour la Dominique, a signalé vendredi 6 juillet le Centre national des ouragans, basé à Miami. L'ouragan Beryl restait vendredi en catégorie 1 sur l'échelle de Saffir-Simpson qui en compte 5, selon le dernier point d'information du NHC, à 21 heures. "Beryl s'est un peu renforcé. On s'attend désormais à ce qu'il reste ouragan en se rapprochant des Petites Antilles", situées encore à plus de 1600 kilomètres de distance de lui, a ajouté NHC, précisant qu'il se déplaçait à 24km/h vers l'ouest.

La collectivité de Saint-Martin, île où l'ouragan Irma a fait 11 morts dans la partie française, a précisé que "si un phénomène pluvieux venait à directement concerner nos îles", elle ouvrirait "trois abris cycloniques pour les personnes sinistrées vivant sous tente ou bâche et leur permettre de se mettre au sec".

Cette saison 2018 pourrait compter dix à seize tempêtes tropicales, a annoncé en mai l'Agence nationale océanique et atmosphérique (NOAA). Parmi elles, cinq à neuf pourraient se transformer en ouragans.
