Quebec health authorities say 33 people in the province have died from heat-related complications over the last few days.
The victims who succumbed to the heat were between the ages of 50 and 85 and did not have air conditioning in their residences and lived alone in apartments, officials said.
Eighteen of those deaths were in Montreal, where Thursday's temperature was expected to climb to 113 degrees with humidity.
Officials urged residents to keep themselves hydrated and remain in the shade, while Montreal opened pools and air conditioned spaces to the public. "Heat risk in an urban setting is a combination of medical, social and environmental exposures".
"Montreal is very big heat island", he said, referring to an environmental phenomenon caused by a lack of vegetation and an abundance of concrete.
