Afghan security forces, supported by global troops, are now trying to oust Islamic State militants from their strongholds the eastern province of Nangarhar. The statement and Afghan official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said the attack occurred in Uruzgan province. In that incident, a Romanian soldier was injured. A Pentagon report last month said there were 47 so-called "green-on-green" attacks, or incidents where Afghan soldiers turn on their own side, so far this year.

Incidents like these have decreased in frequency in recent years as United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces have increased vetting of Afghan troops and taken precautionary measures, such as assigning protection forces known as "guardian angels" to advisory units.
