  • Mob slaughters 300 crocodiles in Indonesia following death of local man

Enraged villagers in West Papua slaughtered almost 300 crocodiles after a local man was mauled to death.

The man had been looking for grass for his cattle near one of the crocodile ponds at the farm in Sorong district when he was attacked by a crocodile on Friday, police said.

Two men stand among dead crocodiles slaughtered by a mob in Sorong in Indonesia's Papua province on Saturday. The 48-year-old victim "was bitten on the leg and then fatally struck by the tail of one of the crocodiles".

The attack happened last week when the angry mob stormed a local animal sanctuary to avenge a local man's death.

Villagers reportedly had standing issues with the sanctuary, and objected to its location in a residential area as well as what they said were insufficient barriers to secure the crocodiles on the farm's grounds.

But one of the conditions was that the reptiles did not disturb the community, he said.

"The residents used knives to slaughter the crocodiles", a resident told the Jakarta Post. "The crocodiles were caught and dragged outside and stabbed to death". "It was so horrid to see", Olga said.

According to the ABC, guards heard screams coming from inside the farm and when they investigated the commotion, they found Sugito already dead. Outnumbered police and conservation officials were unable to prevent the attack and said criminal charges could be brought against the villagers. "There were steps and requirements to meet, and it was under the authority of the local government", he said. Crocodiles are protected animals in Indonesia.

Officers later said about five witnesses have been questioned but no suspects have been named.
