Pope Francis will meet privately with victims of clerical sexual abuse during his visit to Ireland this weekend, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The main objective of the trip to Ireland is to close a week-long global Catholic gathering on the theme of the family that takes place every three years in a different city.

Spokesman Greg Burke told reporters at a briefing on the August 25-26 trip the details of the meeting would not be announced until after it was over and it would be up to the victims if they wanted to speak afterwards.

"I acknowledge that Pope Francis will meet with victims and survivors of abuse and hears their stories at first hand and that is an important step but it must also be followed up with action".
