A survey of more than 26,000 people in 25 nations released by the Pew Research Center on October 1 found that only 27 percent trusted Trump to do the right thing in world affairs, compared to 30 percent who expressed confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin and 34 percent who voiced confidence in Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Since taking office in January 2017, Trump has pulled the United States out of worldwide agreements such as the Paris accord to combat climate change and the deal to curb Iran's nuclear program, cultivated relations with authoritarian leaders including Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, and severely criticized neighboring Canada and Mexico as well as Germany and other NATO allies.
The poll recorded historically low support for Trump among key allies including Britain, where only 28% of respondents said they had confidence in the United States president, Canada (25%), and France and Germany where Trump's confidence ratings stood below 10%.
The most trusted global leader, by contrast, was German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who claimed the confidence of 52% of all respondents. Strikingly, however, that has not translated directly into a lack of support for the United States. In Australia, only 14 per cent though it would be better if China was the global leader.
The poll comes as Trump nears his two-year mark in the Oval Office, an era defined by a USA retreat from multilateralism overseas and dramatic chaos within, from top advisors being indicted on criminal charges to Cabinet members being sacked on Twitter.
The drop was even more dramatic for Mr. Trump himself.
Trump's performance last week at the U.N. General Assembly, an annual meeting of the world's top leaders and diplomats, exemplified numerous results of the survey.

That put Trump in fifth place out of the five world leaders Pew asked about.
All the while, the world was watching. "Large majorities say the USA doesn't take into account the interests of countries like theirs when making foreign policy decisions". But the decline is most stark in Canada and Europe, which have borne the brunt of Trump's brash public tirades and fierce diplomatic fights including trade policies and the Iran nuclear deal.
Only 38 per cent of French and 39 per cent of Canadians said they had a positive view of the United States, both down from past year.
Pew said frustration with the US has been particularly pronounced among some of America's closest allies and neighbors. She noted that some countries in Central Europe, such as the Czech Republic and Hungary, have begun cozying up to Russian Federation as US influence and stature in Europe wanes.
The timing of the survey may partly explain why more than eight in 10 Canadians say the U.S.
Despite a plunge in confidence for the United States, other countries are still pushing through major foreign-policy measures with Trump. In Mexico, positive views of the US have decreased by an even greater percentage than in Canada since the end of the Obama presidency. Meanwhile, Argentina, Russia and Tunisia stand out as the only three countries where just one-third or fewer prefer US leadership.
However, the survey by the Pew Research Center released Tuesday also found that, despite the high ratings for the USA, there are concerns in Japan about the trajectory of American power.
