Robert Jordan's WHEEL OF TIME In Development as AMAZON TV Series

The Wheel of Time series is based on Robert Jordan's best-selling fantasy novels, which according to an Amazon press release, "have sold more than 90 million copies worldwide".

This marks the second big fantasy series coming from Amazon Prime, the first being The Lord of the Rings.

The Wheel of Time series spans 14 novels (plus a prequel) starting with The Eye of the World, published in 1990. Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELD, Hemlock Grove) is developing the series for TV, and will serve as showrunner, with Sony Pictures TV co-producing.

Set in an epic world where magic exists but only women can use it, "The Wheel of Time" follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the "Aes Sedai", as she embarks on a risky journey with five young men and women across the world. As the saga begins a sorceress named Moiraine - a member of the secretive magic-using organization the Aes Sedai - arrives in a small village to meet a group of young people, one of whom she believes might be the Dragon Reborn, but all of whom are significant to the pattern of the wheel of time. She embarks on a unsafe journey with five young people who she comes to mentor, one of whom she believes could be the reincarnation of an individual who is prophesized to either save or destroy humanity. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism. Jordan passed away in 2007, leaving what would be the final book unfinished. Harriet McDougal, Jordan's widow, will act as a consulting producer. "We're thrilled to extend our relationship with devotees who've found the book series transformative and welcome new ones by bringing it to life on Prime Video for viewers worldwide". "We believe that Rafe's personal connection to the material and soulful writing will resonate with the book's passionate fans".

Sony Pictures Television's Chris Parnell said Judkins was a "brilliant visionary" and "a true fan of the books".

"[For] so many people, including me, this book series has served as a world to escape to, to lose yourself in, to devour and inhabit completely", Judkins said. "I couldn't be more honored to be the one finally bringing that world to life on screen, for old fans to lose themselves in all over again and new fans to discover for the very first time".
